In color LCDs each individual pixel is divided into three cells, or subpixels, which are colored red, green, and blue, respectively, by additional filters. Each subpixel can be controlled independently to yield thousands or millions of possible colors for each pixel. Older CRT monitors employ a similar method for displaying color. Color components may be arrayed in various pixel geometries, depending on the monitor's usage. Contrast ratio claims Raw LCD TFT panels are usually factory-sorted into three categories, with regard to the number of dead pixels, backlight evenness and general product quality. Additionally, there may be up to +/- 2ms maximum response time differences between individual panels that came off the same assembly line on the same day. The poorest-performing screens are then sold to no-name vendors or used in "value" TFT monitors (often marked with letter V behind the type number), the medium performers are incorporated in gamer-oriented or home office bound TFT displays (sometimes marked with the capital letter S), and the best screens are usually reserved for use in "professional" grade TFT monitors (usually marked with letter P or S after their type number). With prices starting around US$2,000 and going all the way up past US$20,000 (as of 2004), these sets did not sell as quickly as older technologies like CRT. But as prices fall and technology advances, they have started to seriously compete against the CRT sets. Some 42" sets fell below $1,500 at major retailers like Best Buy and Costco during the 2005 Christmas season, and many of the retailers reported that plasma TVs were among the hottest selling items for that season. * The viewing angle of a LCD is usually less than that of most other display technologies thus reducing the number of people who can conveniently view the same image. However, this negative has actually been capitalised upon in two ways. Some vendors offer portables with intentionally reduced viewing angle, to provide additional privacy for example when using the PC in airplanes. Secondly, it allows multiple TV outputs from the same LCD screen just by changing the angle from where the TV is seen. Such a set can also show two different images to one viewer, providing 3-D.
Enlarge Quality control Kent Displays, [1], has also developed a "no power" display that uses Polymer Stabilized Cholesteric Liquid Crystals(ChLCD). The major drawback to the ChLCD display is slow refresh rate, especially with low temperatures. In 1997 Pioneer started selling the first Plasma TV to the public General characteristics Months after the release of the Nintendo Game Boy which had crude monochrome graphics on an LCD without backlight, Atari and Epyx released the Atari Lynx, which was the first handheld game console with interchangeable cartridges to have a backlit color LCD. Subsequent to the Lynx's release, the Sega Game Gear which also had a backlit color LCD was released. However, the Atari Lynx didn't have familiar titles like the Game Gear, and advertisements for the Game Gear claimed "Nintendo dosen't do what Sega does" hence the color graphics on the Game Gear. People however thought that those ads were offensive even though the Game Boy had crude monochrome graphics. Game consoles with color LCDs would not have critical success until the rise of the Gameboy Color.

* While CRTs are capable of displaying multiple video resolutions without introducing artifacts, LCD displays usually produce only crisp images in their "native resolution" or even fractions of it. Due to the immense cost of building TFT factories, the number of major OEM panel vendors probably does not exceed four or five. Several of the most well-known are Samsung, LG.Philips LCD and AU Optronics. The molecules of the liquid crystal have electric charges on them. By applying small electrical charges to transparent electrodes over each pixel or subpixel, the molecules are twisted by electrostatic forces. This changes the twist of the light passing through the molecules, and allows varying degrees of light to pass (or not to pass) through the polarizing filters. * LCD displays generally have a lower contrast ratio than that on a plasma display or CRT. This is due to their "light valve" nature: some light always leaks out making black grey. Raw LCD TFT panels are usually factory-sorted into three categories, with regard to the number of dead pixels, backlight evenness and general product quality. Main article: Color LCD A French company, Nemoptic, has developed another zero-power, paper-like LCD technology which has been mass-produced in Taiwan since July 2003. This technology is intended for use in low-power mobile applications such as e-books and wearable computers. Zero-power LCDs are in competition with electronic paper. Types
